Story – Amma – Best Teacher Ever !!
“Mom, Mom, where are you ” Pakhi rushed into my room. I was working on my system and was very busy as it was month end closing. She jumped on my workstation and sat in a hurry. I pointed towards the chair” Pakhi please don’t sit at my workstation, be nice sometimes.” She jumped and stood”Mom, Please I don’t have time I have to do a lot of preparations for an event on Monday”. I replied, removing my specs “what do you want from me”. She kept her arms around my neck from the back of my wooden Chair, kissed on my cheek and whispered in my ears “1000 Rs”. I stood up in a shock “Every now and then you come for 1000 Rs your demands are increasing day by day like a termite nest outside in the garden”. “Eekks Mom” she made that funny face, which I always loved”Mom, are you comparing your darling princess to termites”. “No, I was comparing your habit of asking money with the size of a termite’s nest” I kept my hand on her head. “Mom, Please give now,” she said. “Okay, tell me the occasion”I replied.”Birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Teacher’s Day Mom”. I moved towards wardrobe to get my bag. She continued” we are 150 students in our academy and we all are preparing a grand party, gifts, and performances it will be an awesome evening I am sure”. I handed the money to her and said: “But please come home before 9.30pm”. She hugged me tightly “Thank you mom Yes, I will”. This gave me a thought to surprise Amma my maths Teacher on Monday. I quickly finished all my work sent emails and then officially applied for leave subject “Leave for the occasion of Teachers Day”. I felt some tinge of happiness in myself some good energy. I went into the kitchen and started thinking of making a cake For Amma.
While scrolling the phone for the recipe I thought, let me call them for this if they are free they can also join me. I took the phone and dialed a number of Lakshmi. “Hello, Lakshmi,” I said. “Hey, Tanuja Long time How are you” she replied. “I am good my dear, let me add Meenakshi also on call” I quickly dialed her number as well. “Meenakshi Hello, This is Tanuja and Lakshmi on call”, I said. “Meenakshi Replied, Hello lovely ladies how come today all well “. “No clue yaar, Tanuja what’s the matter ? last time we did such call 3 years back when we started Nandini,” Lakshmi asked. “I was thinking if you all could come to Mumbai on Monday I am planning a surprise for Amma and girls at Nandini”. “Oh wow !! Tanuja Lakshmi Let’s make it”, Meenakshi Replied.”Indeed, it’s an awesome idea, let me, check and get back to you” Lakshmi said. “Ok, so nothing required as I am local so I will manage everything you guys just come. Done, Done “. We all agreed. I quickly kept the call and called my event in charge “Arun, See I want each and every room of Nandini should look filled with balloons, and keep Menu as I said”. Arun replied, “Sure Mam, everything will be done, You please don’t worry, I know Nandini is close to your heart”.
On Sunday evening, We three met at the coffee shop in Santacruz before everything starts we wanted to have some time together. We three had a tight group hug.
“It looks like it was just yesterday when we use to wear frocks and see today we are in Saree” Meenakshi started. “Yes, of course, we were kids then and now we are mothers,”I replied. I looked at Lakshmi, she was silent I asked her “what happened?”. “Nothing, I was thinking about Amma”. We went to memory lane
40 Years Back,
We three use to stay in slums with many other kids who used to do pickpocketing, Begging, scrap picking etc. near Goregaon station. I use to walk along with Lakshmi and Meenakshi for scrap picking work near the station railway line. Sometimes we use to get food sometimes not. That’s the Life we knew.
Young, beautiful and always smiling in her mid 20’s Sister Sarita from church with her fellow members use to come for community work in our area for teaching, cleaning, and first aid. We three use to always sit close as much as possible to her. Her soft fragrance and shiny glow on her face was just serene. One day as a community cleaning they all came to our place Sister Sarita picked three of us from that place and asked us to come along. We went along with her, she kept us in an orphanage of the church, but she gave us love not less than a Mother. She gave us beautiful names.
She asked three of us to call her “Amma”. She always use to sit and talk to us, tell bedtime stories, help us in our Homework and use to teach us Maths in Community classes. After meeting Amma we got to know the real meaning of life she taught us the that every life has a purpose given by God. With her upbringing today, we three have settled lives and lovely families. I have my Business, Lakshmi is a professor of Maths at Delhi University and Meenakshi is a renowned Physician in Bangalore Civil Hospital.
“Mam, Your Cappuccino”A guy at cafe served us. Lakshmi said “total strength of Nandini is 115 now”. Meenakshi replied “Yes, we need to increase the staff”. “Have kept the details ready will mail it to you if you find it ok, I will start the hiring procedure”.
15 years Back
We three decided to start Nandini a children’s home for girls. We asked Amma and she was so happy to see us enthusiastically working for Nandini. She gave us love filled upbringing, lessons for life, She always taught us to be a good human being and now this was our time to pay back.
We got the purpose of our life in Nandini.
Monday Morning…
“Mam, I hope everything is just as you wished” Arun asked looking at me. “It’s beautiful I am impressed Arun” I replied. “Lakshmi, Meenakshi Come let’s go Amma would be back from church any moment”.
“Amma, Surprise”!! Her gleaming face, head covered with white veil, her bright white saree with blue border she looked just as an angle to me. I can see the tears in her eyes and all three of us went ahead and hugged her. “Happy Teacher’s Day” we three wished in the Chorus. She smiled and kissed our foreheads her touch was so much filled with love and affection as if God is blessing us through this touch.
“You have surprised me this is the best gift ever ” Amma said. “This is nothing in front of what you did Amma, You gave us the best gift, You gave us the purpose of life.” Lakshmi replied.
Love you Amma and Happy teacher’s Day!! We sat on the floor near her chair laying our heads on her lap.
Amma gave us lesson for life, She is the Best Teacher ever. !!
Thank you Amma for everything…
